Gather Materials
As you are gathering your materials, start thinking about who the bath salts will be for. If they’re for yourself, you can use your favorite colors and scents to create something just for you. If you’re gifting them, consider customizing them for the recipient with their favorite essential oils or their bathroom color palette.
Supplies Needed
1 cup Epsom salt1 cup sea salt1/4 cup baking sodaMixing bowlResealable zipper storage bagsFood coloringFunnelGlass containerOptional: scented essential oils
Mix Dry Ingredients
Start by mixing the epsom salt, sea salt, and baking soda together in a bowl until thoroughly combined. Be sure to sift or crush any chunks of the dry materials so that the mixture is fine throughout. At this point, if you choose to make your bath salts scented, add one to two drops of an essential oil of your choosing to the dry mixture and mix until thoroughly combined. If you wish for a stronger scent, add another drop.
Separate Evenly
Once the ingredients are mixed, separate the mixture into equal parts into resealable zipper storage bags. You should have as many baggies as you would like different colors in your bath salts. If you’d like five colors, separate your mixture equally into five different baggies.
Add Food Coloring
Select the colors you’ll be using, and add a few drops (or just a small amount if you’re using gel food coloring) to each bag. You may even want to start with just one drop per bag until you become accustomed to how your food coloring will mix with the salts. You can always add more drops of color later, but you can’t take it away!
Mix the Salts and Food Coloring
Zip each bag closed and be sure that there are no holes or openings. Use your hands to massage the bag until all of the color is evenly spread throughout the salt mixture in each bag. If desired, you can add more color after the mixing is done and you can more clearly see the shades that are being created. Mix until you’re happy with all of the colors.
Funnel the Salts
Whether or not you have a wide-mouthed glass container, we recommend funneling in the salts to create the cleanest lines in your layered look. Without the funnel it’s more difficult to apply salts to directly the area that you want them, and your layers may become uneven. If you have a small-necked bottle like ours, you’ll need a funnel regardless. Gently pour salts into the funnel and let them fall down into the bottle for the first layer.
Layer Each Color
After the first layer, continue the same process with another color. You can create layers that are even in height, or play with the scale and make some thicker and some thinner. Continue this process until you’ve used all of your colors or until you reach the top of your container.
